On Saturday, Chris and I drove to a nearby pond~meadow to look for Monarch caterpillars. When we got there, all the grass and Milkweed had been mowed down. We were really surprised it had been mowed since the land is a wildlife preserve.
A week ago we went there to look for dragonflies and only saw a couple. We didn't get may pictures. This time they were flying everywhere. They don't hold still very long, but we did manage to get some good shots.
Check out the close up of this one's face. It looks like it has makeup on. We have never seen one that looked like this before. We have taken pictures of colorful dragonflies before, but their heads are usually dark brown or black.

I think he overdid it on the foundation and blush!!
Those pics are awesome. Especially the head shot. I've never seen a dragonfly like that. Check out bugguide.net. It's been a big help to me identifying insects. Hope you find the name.
I found it! It's an anax junius.
