One Weird Dragonfly!

On Saturday, Chris and I drove to a nearby pond~meadow to look for Monarch caterpillars. When we got there, all the grass and Milkweed had been mowed down. We were really surprised it had been mowed since the land is a wildlife preserve.

A week ago we went there to look for dragonflies and only saw a couple. We didn't get may pictures. This time they were flying everywhere. They don't hold still very long, but we did manage to get some good shots.

Check out the close up of this one's face. It looks like it has makeup on. We have never seen one that looked like this before. We have taken pictures of colorful dragonflies before, but their heads are usually dark brown or black.

It held still long enough to get several good pictures.

Has anyone else ever seen a dragonfly like this before?

Those pics are awesome. Especially the head shot. I've never seen a dragonfly like that. Check out It's been a big help to me identifying insects. Hope you find the name.
