We went back yesterday and they were open. They will let you hand pick through any of the rocks that can't be used for anything else. There are just a few (million) to choose from.
Here is my favorite sister-in-law playing king (queen) of the mountain.
This is one of the mountains of rocks that we were looking through. It is probably Twenty five feet tall and I couldn't even guess how big it is around.
We ended up picking out about 115 rocks. Most of them are five to six inches in diameter. We also got a few bigger ones for her to use in the garden for decoration.
When we were leaving, we noticed some birds flying around and in and out of the cliffs around the gravel pit. We are pretty sure that they are Cliff Swallows. They had holes in the cliffs and in some of the dirt and fine gravel piles.
I tried to get some pictures of the birds, but they were moving way to fast. I did manage to get a few pictures that turned out OK. This one was just coming out of one of the holes in a pile of dirt.
We spent about a little over an hour at the gravel pit, and about Thirty minutes driving round trip. She spent 10 Dollars for the pickup box of rocks.
Poor Laurie had to stay at home to watch Baby J. I'm sure she had a horrible time not being with us, but she seemed all right when we got home.

What a neat place...I too love rocks and rock gardens or fountains...one of my blogger friend collects heart shaped rocks...she has a whole basket of them! I told her I would be on the lookout for any in the Mountains when I go next week!
:)
I want to go rock picking!!!! How cool to have a place like that near you. (If my parents were to read this, they would just howl - I grew up on a farm, and every spring we had to go out and pick rocks from the fields. Trust me, I was never quite this excited back then!)
wow what a cool place-wish we had one around here
WOW how cool is that - not sure we have anything like that here - you have some great pics too :) Have a wonderful week :)
What fun! I do rocks in my garden too. Helps keep the dogs from digging and the weeds down. We get ours from the creek about 1 mille from our house. Can't wait to see your photos of your garden. I haven't had a chance yet to take photos of my flowers. Have a great week! Too bad about Jimmie and that tire! We'll get them next week!
