Red Admiral!

There is a new house being built around the corner from where we live, so Laurie and I decided to take a short walk to check it out. Laurie brought the camera with her as she does when ever we go out walking. We saw quite a few butterflies in one area on our walk. They were flying around like crazy, but landed quite often.
Please click on the pictures to enlarge.
They didn't look very colorful at first...

... but after they opened their wings, they were beautiful.

We took about 20 pictures of them. We were not sure what kind of butterflies they were, so we checked out a website when we got back home. Click HERE to check it out. The website said that they are Red Admiral Butterflies. The are from the Nymphalidae Family. (Brush-footed Butterflies) It also said that The Red Admiral has a very erratic, rapid flight. (that would explain the flying around like crazy) They take flight from March-October in the north and they winter from October-March in South Texas. Click HERE for more information on the Red Admiral.

We hope you enjoy the pictures.

Have a great day!

My husband and I noticed one of these sitting on our barn/workshop the other morning. I thought it was a moth at first cause it wasn't very pretty. Next thing we knew it turned into a beautiful butterfly! Thanks for the name and info-I really enjoyed!!
Blessings to You! Claudia O.

Outstanding photos; you are very good. I'm glad that camera was there. I got a white admiral, so I'm fascinated. They look nothing alike!
